The Hill – 2003 ongonig

The chosen works reflect exposures, techniques and topics characteristic of my artistic career in recent years. The theme proposed for contemplation represents a territory to be continuously researched on the interior or exterior space. The idea of returning to a space that I photographed in a different period of time is the main reason for this series of works.

I photographed the “Deal” frame in 2003. And that “hill” reappeared as a rebirth in 2024 during a summer trip. That’s how I remembered that I had made two or three frames. Returning to the studio I found the “lost” film from 2003 with those frames. The image I propose is a result of fragmented visual information, which tells about the successive changes that I have memorized in a specific period or of visual fragments part of a moment or an instant. I like to “paint” in the darkroom. In addition to themes and subjects, the exploration in the dark as part of photography is brought to a territory inclined towards meditation and experiment. The landscape-portrait can be interpreted as an expression of the image rather than the image itself. The selection of works present in the application continues my technical approach of working with defective cameras, expired film and expired paper.

The interpretation of the landscape and the transformation of that frame represent the successive or alternative passage from one state to another, from one aspect to another. The “hill” becomes a sensory reflection of an “object” in our mind in the form of sensations and perceptions. And the “visual” part becomes a plastic representation of the appearance of everything that exists in memory. The image can be interpreted as a brutal or rudimentary form of the encounter between the contemporary and the traditional image. The repository of works is intended to be a continuous meditation on the outer space and a reflection on the inner self, often talking about the circle, gesture, light and shadow, but also about the darkness of the room without artificial light.
